The Global Issue Of Mental Health And Shortage Of Nursing...

The aim of this utilization review is compare and contrast the global issue of mental health and shortage of nursing staff. Mental health is not the primary choice of nursing students when they graduate, and there is a shortage of psychiatric nurses as the older generation is coming closer to retirement. Across the states in Australia, studies have been conducted by Registered Nurses to survey and analyze nursing students and their field of preference after graduation. From the studies analyzed in this literature review, mental health has the least number of interested future nurses. Four articles, which included 2 qualitative researches, one quantitative, and one systematic review, were chosen to compare and contrast to each other. All the articles chosen were studies done no earlier than 2007, and research must have been conducted by at least one nurse, and published in a peer review nursing journal. Topics in this subject were not found in the United States however, different sta tes in Australia were found and compared to each other. Findings on all the research reviewed led to the same results; mental health is the least preferred by nursing students to choose as a career, and the studies confirmed that the more theoretical and clinical training the students had, the more positive views the students reported on psychiatric nursing for their future.
